Welcome to Clash of Clans
Clash of Clans is a mobile strategy game where you build a village, train an army, and battle other players. The game has been running since 2012 and is continuously updated — it’s deeper than it looks, and the learning curve can be steep without a guide.
This guide gives new players the foundational knowledge to progress efficiently and avoid the most common beginner traps.
The Core Loop
Every session in COC follows the same loop:
- Collect resources from Gold Mines, Elixir Collectors, and Dark Elixir Drills
- Queue upgrades using Builders
- Train troops and attack other villages for loot
- Defend — your village gets attacked while you’re offline
- Repeat at higher levels
The game is primarily about resource management and time management. Understanding what to upgrade next and why is the entire skill of progressing efficiently.
Resources Explained
Gold
Used for: Building and upgrading defenses, traps, walls
Gold is stored in Gold Storages. Collectors gather it passively. Raiding other players is the fastest way to fill your Gold.
Elixir
Used for: Building and upgrading troops, spells, some buildings (Army Camps, Barracks, Laboratory)
Elixir follows the same rules as Gold — passive collection + raiding.
Dark Elixir
Used for: Hero upgrades, Dark Elixir troops (Hog Rider, Witch, etc.), some spells
Dark Elixir is the most precious resource in the game. Protect your Dark Elixir Storage — it’s what attackers hunt most.
Gems
Used for: Speeding up timers, buying resources, extra builders
Don’t spend Gems on anything except Builders. The Builder Hut (extra builder) costs 500 Gems and is the highest-value purchase in the game. Save every Gem you earn from clearing obstacles and achievements until you have 5 builders.
Builders Are Everything
Builders are the most important resource in COC. You start with 2. Each additional builder costs Gems:
- Builder 3: 500 Gems
- Builder 4: 1,000 Gems
- Builder 5: 2,000 Gems
Goal: Get 5 Builders before doing anything else with your Gems. This is the single best investment in the game. With 5 builders, you progress at 5× the rate of someone with 1 builder.
Until you have 5 builders, always have every builder active. An idle builder is wasted time.
Town Hall — Don’t Rush It
The Town Hall unlocks new buildings, troops, and content. New players want to upgrade it as fast as possible — this is the #1 beginner mistake.
Why rushing is bad:
- You unlock new buildings you can’t afford to upgrade
- You face stronger opponents in multiplayer matchmaking
- Under-upgraded defenses make you easy 3-star loot for higher-level attackers
- Your heroes stay low-level (they’re expensive and slow to upgrade)
The rule: Before upgrading your Town Hall, max out (or near-max) everything at your current level. This means:
- All defenses upgraded to current max
- Heroes pushed toward TH level caps
- All troops/spells you regularly use upgraded
- Walls at or near max level
Taking 2-3 months at each Town Hall level is normal and correct.
Your First Hero: Barbarian King (TH7)
The Barbarian King unlocks at Town Hall 7. He costs Dark Elixir to build and upgrade.
What he does: He’s a massive melee fighter who guards your base when defending and leads your army when attacking. His ability summons extra Barbarians and briefly makes him invincible.
Key rules for heroes:
- Keep heroes upgrading at all times — every day of idle hero is wasted Dark Elixir potential
- Heroes are down (sleeping) while upgrading — don’t upgrade before a Clan War attack
- The Archer Queen (TH9) is even more powerful than the King — upgrade her first when she’s available
Attacking Basics
Finding a Match
Tap “Attack” → “Multiplayer” to find a base to raid. You see the loot available before you commit to attacking. Scout first — look for:
- Full Gold/Elixir storages
- Low-level walls or missing defenses
- A Town Hall outside the walls (free 1-star + bonus loot)
Deployment
Tap troops from your army panel to deploy them. You cannot cancel deployment once a troop is placed.
Beginner attack tips:
- Spread troops to avoid splash damage (Mortars and Wizard Towers hit groups)
- Use Wall Breakers to open wall compartments before main troops get stuck
- Deploy Giants first — they soak damage while Archers/Wizards deal damage from behind
Stars
- 1 star: Destroy the Town Hall
- 2 stars: Destroy 50% of the base
- 3 stars: Destroy 100% of the base
In multiplayer, 1-star attacks still earn loot. In Clan War, stars determine war results.
Defending Your Village
You can’t actively defend — attacks happen while you’re offline. Your job is to build a base that passively resists attacks.
Basic defense principles:
- Protect your storages. Keep Gold, Elixir, and Dark Elixir Storages inside walls near the center.
- Don’t leave the Town Hall outside. An unprotected Town Hall is free loot and a free star for attackers.
- Cover the base with defenses. Every part of your base should be within range of at least one defense.
- Use the Clan Castle. Request troops from your Clan — they defend your base automatically when triggered.
Joining a Clan
Joining a Clan is one of the most important things you can do as a new player.
Benefits:
- Clan Castle troops for both attack (request troops) and defense (they auto-defend)
- Clan Wars — earn bonus loot and practice against same-level opponents
- Clan Games — earn magic items (Book of Heroes, Builder Potions) as a group
- Advice and help from experienced clanmates
How to find a clan: Use the in-game search. Look for clans that:
- Match your Town Hall level
- Have a “Required Trophies” threshold you can meet
- Are active in Clan Games (check participation)
Key Milestones to Hit
| Milestone | Goal |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Build all available buildings, start upgrading |
| Week 1 | Get Builder 3 (save Gems), join a Clan |
| Month 1 | 5 Builders, TH7 or TH8 with most buildings upgraded |
| Month 3 | Barbarian King level 15+, near-maxed TH8 defenses |
| Month 6 | TH9 with Archer Queen unlocked and leveling |
Beginner Mistakes to Avoid
Spending Gems on anything except Builders. Speed-ups, resource refills, and magic items from Gems are a trap. 5 Builders is the only Gem purchase that pays for itself.
Rushing Town Hall. See above — the most common and most damaging mistake.
Ignoring hero upgrades. Even 10 levels on a hero dramatically changes your attack capability. Dark Elixir goes to heroes first.
Leaving builders idle. Every idle builder is time and progress lost forever. If you can’t afford a building upgrade right now, farm more loot — but always have a target queued.
Attacking without a plan. Random deployment loses attacks. Pick a strategy (even “Giants + Archers” works at low levels), commit to a deployment angle, and follow through.
