TH16 Upgrade Priority Guide 2026: Max Out the Right Way

← All Guides

The optimal TH16 upgrade order for 2026. Covers the new Giga Inferno weapon, Spell Tower, hero equipment endgame, and how to become fully war-ready at max Town Hall.

TH16 Upgrade Overview

TH16 is the current max Town Hall and the endpoint of the main village progression. There’s no Town Hall 17 waiting ahead — which changes the upgrade mindset significantly. Instead of racing toward the next unlock, TH16 is about deepening existing systems: maxing hero equipment, fully upgrading the Giga Inferno weapon, and ensuring every defense is at its ceiling.

The biggest mistake TH16 players make is continuing to treat it like a mid-game TH — rushing through buildings while neglecting equipment. At TH16, the Blacksmith is as important as any Builder.

First 24 Hours at TH16

  1. Upgrade Town Hall weapon to Giga Inferno — The TH16 weapon upgrade is one of the longest single timers in the game. Start it immediately.
  2. Build all new defensive slots — TH16 adds additional building capacity. Fill every slot before upgrading.
  3. Upgrade Spell Tower — TH16 Spell Tower reaches its most powerful level. It should be a day-one build target.
  4. Assess equipment — Open the Blacksmith and check your equipment levels against the TH16 war-ready benchmark (Giant Gauntlet 18+, Frozen Arrow 18+).

Priority 1: Hero Equipment (Endgame)

At TH16 there are no more hero level unlocks beyond the current cap. The final frontier of hero power is equipment levels.

War-ready TH16 equipment benchmarks:

HeroEquipmentTarget Level
Barbarian KingGiant Gauntlet18–20
Barbarian KingSpiky Ball15+
Archer QueenFrozen Arrow18–20
Grand WardenHealing Tome15+
Grand WardenLife Gem15+
Royal ChampionHog Rider Puppet15+

Upgrading Legendary equipment from level 15 to 18+ at TH16 is a meaningful DPS and survivability jump — not cosmetic. These upgrades are the primary progression content at TH16.

Ore sources at TH16:

  • Clan Games max tier (every month, never miss it)
  • Raid Weekend Capital Gold → Starry Ore exchange
  • Seasonal event challenges (check the event tab weekly)
  • Achievement completions that award ore

Priority 2: Giga Inferno (Town Hall Weapon)

The TH16 Giga Inferno at max level fires a multi-target beam that deals catastrophic damage to any army cluster approaching the Town Hall. At lower levels it’s a single-target beam — at max level, multiple beams.

Why rush the Giga Inferno:

  • It’s a permanent passive defense on the Town Hall itself
  • Level 5 Giga Inferno significantly reduces 3-star rates on well-designed bases
  • Unlike other defenses, it doesn’t require a Builder — it’s the Town Hall upgrade itself

Start it day one and let it run in the background while Builders handle external defenses.

Priority 3: Scattershots and Eagle Artillery

TH16’s Scattershots and Eagle Artillery are the defenses attackers most want to eliminate first — because they’re the most dangerous to ground and mixed armies respectively.

Max these before other defenses:

  1. Both Scattershots to max — TH16 Scattershots in anti-air mode counter Super Dragon Zap; in ground mode they’re the primary Root Rider counter
  2. Eagle Artillery to max — Every level improves burst damage and radius
  3. Inferno Towers — Max both; multi-target Infernos are essential vs. Super Witch clusters

Priority 4: Spell Tower

The TH16 Spell Tower at max level can either freeze enemies mid-attack or speed up your own CC troops. In a war defense context, Freeze mode is almost always correct — a well-timed freeze stops a Root Rider + Super Witch push cold and often means the difference between a 2-star and 3-star defense.

Get the Spell Tower to level 3+ early in TH16. The level threshold at level 3 widens the freeze radius meaningfully.

Placement tip: Centralize the Spell Tower so its freeze radius covers both the Town Hall compartment and the most likely push lane. A Spell Tower firing from outside the core base is a much less effective.

Priority 5: Air Defenses and X-Bows

TH16 has the most Air Defenses and X-Bows in the game. Maxing all of them is a long project — approach it systematically:

  • Do one side of your base at a time (all Air Defenses on the left side, then right)
  • This ensures your base never has a completely undefended attack angle while upgrades are running
  • X-Bows to max in parallel — at TH16, X-Bows reach level 12, with meaningful HP and damage upgrades

Priority 6: Heroes

TH16 heroes max out at high levels (King 90, Queen 90, Warden 70, RC 50, Druid 40). If you arrived at TH16 under-leveled, continue the grind — but expect it to be a 3-6 month process.

Dark Elixir allocation: Same hierarchy as lower TH levels.

  1. Archer Queen first
  2. Grand Warden (Elixir — never idle)
  3. Barbarian King
  4. Royal Champion
  5. Druid (Elixir — never idle)

The difference between a level 80 Queen and level 90 Queen at TH16 is meaningful in war — each level adds stats plus the equipment scaling multiplier.

Common TH16 Upgrade Mistakes

Neglecting equipment upgrades. At TH16, many players fall back on old habits — builders on buildings, heroes upgrading, equipment ignored. Equipment at TH16 is the highest-value upgrade per resource spent. The Blacksmith should always have something upgrading.

Putting the Spell Tower in a corner. A corner Spell Tower only affects attacks coming from that angle. Centralize it so its freeze radius covers the widest possible section of the base interior.

Spreading builders across too many low-priority defenses. With 5 builders and many upgrades available, it’s tempting to spread work across Cannons, Archer Towers, Mortars, and Wizard Towers simultaneously. This delays your highest-impact defenses. Finish Scattershots, Eagle, and Infernos first — then spread to the rest.
