TH8 Attack Overview

TH8 is a significant step up from TH7. Three major new mechanics arrive: the Dark Elixir Storage introduces hero upgrade planning, X-Bows become the core ground defense, and Hog Riders unlock as the first Dark Elixir troop with genuine war utility.

TH8 has four Air Defenses (up from three at TH7), which makes Mass Dragons harder to execute cleanly. The best players at TH8 transition from pure Dragon spam to GoWiPe (Golems, Wizards, P.E.K.K.A.) or Mass Hog Riders as their primary war strategies.


TH8 Defense Overview

Four Air Defenses: The jump from 3 to 4 Air Defenses at TH8 is significant. Destroying one with Lightning Spells becomes more important, or Dragon army composition must increase to absorb the additional fire.

X-Bows (×2): Ground mode X-Bows shred Hog Riders and Giants in seconds if not managed. Freeze Spells become critical when X-Bows are engaged.

Seeking Air Mines: TH8 introduces Seeking Air Mines — invisible traps that deal heavy damage to air troops. They’re commonly placed along the path to Air Defenses. Dragons and Balloons trigger them.

Clan Castle: TH8 CCs commonly hold Valkyries, Witches, or high-level Archers. Lure and kill before attacking.


Strategy 1: Dragons + Balloon (DraBall)

The evolution of TH7 Mass Dragons. At TH8, Balloons complement Dragons by targeting Air Defenses directly.

Execution

  1. Lightning 2 Spells on one Air Defense. At TH8, eliminating one of four Air Defenses dramatically improves Dragon survivability.
  2. Lure and kill CC.
  3. Fan Dragons across the entry face, wide deployment.
  4. Balloons behind Dragons — once Dragons draw Air Defense fire, Balloons follow and prioritize Air Defenses with their targeted behavior.
  5. Rage on Dragon cluster approaching second Air Defense.
  6. Minions for cleanup.

Strategy 2: GoWiPe

The premier TH8 ground strategy for experienced attackers. GoWiPe (Golem, Wizards, P.E.K.K.A.) has a high 3-star ceiling against any TH8 base.

Execution

  1. Lure and kill CC with Poison + Archer/Wizard.
  2. Funnel corners — deploy 2 Wizards at each corner of the entry side to destroy outer buildings and channel the push inward.
  3. Deploy Golems at the entry point. They tank Inferno and X-Bow fire.
  4. Wall Breakers once Golems have aggro — they’ll breach the first wall layer.
  5. P.E.K.K.A. behind Golems. P.E.K.K.As follow Golems into the base.
  6. Wizards in a line behind P.E.K.K.As — they provide splash kill for skeletons and buildings.
  7. Rage on the P.E.K.K.A + Wizard cluster at the X-Bow area.
  8. Freeze the X-Bow when it locks onto P.E.K.K.As — a single-target Inferno or X-Bow burning through your P.E.K.K.As is the most common GoWiPe failure.
  9. Archer cleanup for outer ring after the core is cleared.

Critical: Funneling at step 2 is everything in GoWiPe. If the Golems path sideways along the outside instead of inward, the whole attack falls apart. Always take 3–4 minutes to set funnel before deploying the main army.


Strategy 3: Mass Hog Riders

TH8 is the first level where Mass Hog Riders are a legitimate war strategy. Hogs jump walls and target defenses directly — they’re the first troop that truly ignores base layout.

Key Mechanics

Hog Rider pathing: Hogs prioritize the nearest defense. They jump walls to reach it. This makes base layout largely irrelevant — Hogs will find every defense.

Double Giant Bombs: TH8 bases almost always have Giant Bomb pairs that target ground troops. A cluster of Hogs hitting a Double Giant Bomb loses 6–8 Hogs instantly. Deploy Hogs in two waves to avoid triggering both Giant Bombs at once.

Execution

  1. Lure CC. A Valkyrie CC will decimate Hog clusters if not lured first.
  2. Identify Double Giant Bomb locations. Check base layout — common placements are in the path between defenses, especially near the Town Hall.
  3. Deploy Hogs in two groups (60/40 split) on the same side — send 60% first, wait 2–3 seconds, then the remaining 40%. This staggering reduces Giant Bomb clustering.
  4. Heal Spell when Hog cluster is between defenses (not at a defense — that’s too late).
  5. Second Heal at the X-Bow engagement — the X-Bow burns Hogs faster than any other defense.
  6. Witch deployed slightly behind for skeleton support.
  7. Archers for cleanup.

Transitioning from TH7 to TH8 Attacks

The biggest mental shift from TH7 to TH8:

TH7: Dragon spam with Rage wins almost everything
TH8: Four Air Defenses + X-Bows mean pure Dragon spam fails against decent bases. You need either Lightning setup shots or a ground strategy.

Take 2–3 weeks to learn GoWiPe before settling on Mass Hogs as a fallback. GoWiPe has the highest ceiling at TH8 and teaches funnel technique used at every TH level above.


Common TH8 Mistakes

Using TH7 Dragon army at TH8 without modification. Eight level-1 Dragons against four Air Defenses without Lightning preparation will fail against a well-designed TH8. Always Lightning one Air Defense or bring 10–12 Dragons.

Not Freezing X-Bows in GoWiPe. X-Bows at TH8 have enough DPS to kill P.E.K.K.As in 8–10 seconds. A Freeze Spell the moment an X-Bow locks onto your P.E.K.K.A saves the attack.

Deploying all Hogs in one cluster. A Double Giant Bomb triggers and deletes 8 Hogs simultaneously. Two-wave deployment spreads the Giant Bomb risk.

Ignoring the Barbarian King. At TH8 you should have a Barbarian King. He’s a powerful funnel tool for GoWiPe — deploy him before Golems to clear a corner building and establish the entry angle.
