TH14 Upgrade Overview
TH14 is the Town Hall level where Hero Equipment arrives — and it changes everything. For the first time in COC, your heroes can be equipped with gear that grants stat bonuses, new abilities, and passive effects. A TH14 with well-upgraded equipment attacks and defends at a level that would have been impossible at TH14 before equipment existed.
TH14 also introduces the Monolith, a new defense that absorbs damage from nearby buildings and reflects it as burst damage. Understanding it is key to both attacking and defending at this level.
First 24 Hours at TH14
- Build the Monolith — New TH14-exclusive defense. Start upgrading immediately.
- Visit the Blacksmith — The Hero Equipment system unlocks. Craft your first equipment items with Shiny Ore.
- Build all new defenses — TH14 adds new building slots. Fill them before upgrading.
- Start Giga Inferno TH upgrade — The Town Hall weapon upgrades at TH14. Start it on day one.
Priority 1: Hero Equipment
This is the TH14 priority that separates fast progressors from slow ones. Hero Equipment provides power gains that dwarf raw hero level upgrades at this stage.
Immediate equipment goals:
- Craft Barbarian Puppet and get it to level 9 (cheap Common equipment, massive power spike for the King)
- Craft Archer Puppet and Invisibility Vial for the Queen (gets her to mid-level Queen Walk capability immediately)
- Craft Life Gem and Rage Gem for the Warden (passive healing and attack speed boost throughout every attack)
Why equipment first: A TH13 hero with level 9 Common equipment attacks comparably to the same hero at TH14 without equipment. Equipment at low upgrade cost delivers disproportionate returns.
Longer-term equipment goals:
- Earn or craft Giant Gauntlet for the King — the single biggest power spike in the game
- Earn Frozen Arrow for the Queen — transforms Queen Walk from good to nearly unstoppable
- Upgrade Healing Tome for the Warden to replace Rage Gem by late TH14
Priority 2: Heroes
With equipment being actively upgraded, continue hero level grinding in this order:
- Archer Queen — Target level 75-80. Queen Walk with Frozen Arrow at level 75+ is nearly impossible to stop.
- Grand Warden — Target level 50-55. Keep him upgrading constantly with Elixir.
- Barbarian King — Target level 70-75. Giant Gauntlet makes the King tankier than his level suggests — equipment compensates for lower levels.
- Royal Champion — Target level 30-35. Hog Rider Puppet equipment closes the gap between lower RC levels and higher ones.
Priority 3: Monolith
The Monolith is TH14’s most unique defense. It absorbs damage dealt to nearby buildings and fires a burst when its charge reaches maximum. At higher levels, the burst becomes a base-wide threat.
Why upgrade it early:
- Level 1 Monolith has low absorption; level 3+ significantly changes how attacks must be timed
- Maxed Monolith in the center of a base forces attackers to spread troops (reducing DPS) or risk a catastrophic burst wiping their push
Target: Monolith to level 3 in the first month.
Priority 4: Key Defenses
Tier 1
- Eagle Artillery — Upgrade to max first among standard defenses. TH14 Eagle does significantly more damage at higher levels.
- Inferno Towers (both) — Multi-target and single-target Infernos both upgrade at TH14. Max them before other standard defenses.
- Scattershots × 2 — TH14 has two. Max Scattershots stop Super Dragon and Balloon strategies cold.
Tier 2
- Air Defenses × 6 — TH14 has six Air Defenses. Keep them upgraded — under-leveled Air Defenses are immediately targeted by Hydra and EDrag attackers.
- X-Bows × 4 — TH14 X-Bows reach high damage levels; upgrade alongside Air Defenses.
Tier 3
- Wizard Towers, Cannons, Archer Towers — Steady upgrade targets for idle builders.
Priority 5: Blacksmith Equipment Upgrades
Upgrading equipment at the Blacksmith costs Shiny Ore (Common), Glowy Ore (Epic), and Starry Ore (Legendary).
Ore sources:
- Clan Games rewards
- Season pass
- Raid Weekend shops
- Seasonal events
Weekly Blacksmith habits:
- Check the Blacksmith for discounted upgrade costs (rotates weekly)
- Always have at least one equipment item upgrading
- Prioritize Giant Gauntlet and Frozen Arrow if you have Legendary shards

Common TH14 Mistakes
Ignoring Hero Equipment. Players who follow old TH14 upgrade advice skip equipment because it didn’t exist when that advice was written. Equipment upgrades deliver more power per resource than almost any building upgrade at TH14.
Spending Shiny Ore randomly. Ore is limited. Upgrade the equipment you actively use — don’t level Rage Vial if you’re running Frozen Arrow + Invisibility Vial on the Queen.
Under-investing in the Monolith. A level 1 Monolith barely affects attackers. A maxed, centralized Monolith changes how TH14 must be attacked. Upgrade it early.
Upgrading King over Queen. At TH14 the Queen’s attack value per level still exceeds the King’s. The Giant Gauntlet equipment compensates for lower King levels — the Queen does not have that luxury unless Frozen Arrow is already obtained.
